Focus on language proficiency of students with migration background

NEPS-L1

This project is a subproject integrated into the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). Thematically, it is assigned to the NEPS pillar “Educational Acquisition of Individuals with Migration Backgrounds”. In 2022, as part of NEPS, another cohort of students entering secondary school was drawn. Within this cohort, competence tests in the heritage languages Russian and Turkish will be administered to students belonging to the two largest migrant groups in sixth grade. This is aimed at determining not only subjectively assessed language competencies but also objectively tested competencies in the heritage language. The goal of this project is to further develop the listening comprehension test already used in an existing NEPS cohort and to expand it with newly developed test tasks. These competence data will enable a comparison of the heritage language competencies of students from both cohorts.
