Dynamic Collection of Dynamic Life Courses

Longitudinal individual data have gained significant importance in recent years and have become an indispensable basis for analysis in empirical educational research. Collecting high-quality life course data in online panel surveys is extremely challenging—for both the researchers designing these surveys and the respondents participating in them. The project Dynamic Surveys for Dynamic Life Courses is a methodologically oriented research project within the DFG Priority Program 2431 “New Data Spaces for the Social Sciences.” It addresses the question of how life course information can be collected in online panel surveys in a way that both reduces the survey burden for participants and simultaneously increases data quality and response rates. So far, there is very limited experience and knowledge in this area. The goal of the project is to develop and methodologically test an innovative web tool that allows respondents in online panel surveys to report relevant life events in a timely and self-directed manner. The project is a joint research initiative of the German Centre for Higher Education and Science Research (DZHW) and the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi).
